Next-hour delivery. Ten-minute grocery drops. At some point in the last decade, speed stopped being one factor among many in ecommerce and became, for a huge number of platforms, the primary thing being sold.

How we got here

Amazon Prime effectively rewired shopper expectations around delivery speed, and the rest of the industry has spent years trying to match it. What started as a genuine convenience improvement became, gradually, the dominant competitive battleground — to the point where “how fast can you get it to me” now frequently outweighs “is this actually the right product” in how platforms design the entire shopping experience.

Speed is easier to measure than quality

Part of why speed won out as the defining metric is simple: it’s easy to quantify. Delivery time is a clean number you can display, promise, and compete on. Whether a product is genuinely well-suited to what someone needs is messier, harder to measure, and much harder to turn into a marketing headline. Platforms gravitated toward the metric that was simplest to optimise and advertise, even when it wasn’t necessarily the thing shoppers valued most in every purchase.

The genuine cost of the speed obsession

Optimising primarily for speed has real consequences. It pressures logistics networks and the people working within them — tighter delivery windows, higher parcel volumes, less margin for anything to go wrong. It increases the environmental cost of fulfilment, as we’ve written about separately. And it subtly reframes the entire shopping relationship: from “did I get the right thing” to “did I get it fast enough” — two questions that are not the same, and that sometimes actively conflict with each other.

Not every purchase needs to be fast

The uncomfortable truth is that speed matters enormously for some purchases — an urgent replacement part, a last-minute gift, something genuinely needed today — and barely at all for others. A considered purchase, something you’re comparing carefully or saving up for, doesn’t benefit meaningfully from arriving in two hours instead of two days. Yet the industry has flattened the entire shopping experience around a single expectation, regardless of whether the purchase actually calls for it.

What a healthier relationship with speed looks like

Speed is a genuinely useful option to have available. It’s a poor default to build an entire industry’s incentives around. A shopping experience that lets speed be a choice — rather than an assumed universal expectation — respects the fact that not every purchase is an emergency, and not every shopper wants the environmental and human cost of treating it like one.

Ecommerce #DeliverySpeed #Sustainability #OnlineShopping #RetailTrends #ShopWithMore #ConsumerBehaviour

Same-day delivery.
